I rent in an older building in Pittsburgh where the windows are tall and narrow, and my current window unit barely fits and blocks most of the light. I'm thinking about switching to a portable air conditioner for the bedroom this summer, but I've never used one and I'm not sure how they handle a room that gets direct afternoon sun. What I keep wondering about is the vent setup through a narrow sash window, whether the window kit holds up without drilling, and how much louder a single-hose unit is compared to what I have now. I don't want to buy something that ends up being more hassle than the window unit. If you've run a portable unit in an old apartment, how did the venting work out and was the cooling actually worth it? Any input would help.

I'm not in Pittsburgh, but I am in Canada and I feel like our climates are similar enough that maybe my experience can help.

I assume you mean the floor model air conditioners that run a hose to the window for venting outside, and I will say they are generally far more powerful than the window units, and I doubt very much the afternoon sun will do a thing to slow one of those units down. They are very efficient and work extremely well since they have at least twice the cooling surface that window units have.

The only down side is they tend to be a bit more expensive and they take up a bit of floor space.
